2012 Is Winding Down...

Well, I never seem to have gotten the big block of quilting time I was expecting and hoping for.  I have gotten some knitting done, and I may yet get a bit of quilting done before the end of the year.  It all depends on how much life decides to cooperate, or not.

Here are the socks I've finished recently and haven't yet shared here:

I Love Watermelon

Dinah

IDon'tKnitintheKitchen

XmasSocks

UsingItUp

WatermelonForMarty

I have the next few days pretty much free, so I'm planning to spend it getting "lost" in some sewing.  And maybe some knitting as well.

I hope that 2012 winds down in a good way for you, and that 2013 will bring you health, happiness, and lots of good things -- and the grace to appreciate them all.

Let the Crazy Times Begin

The weekend before Thanksgiving, I was at our Toastmasters Fall District Conference.  We were at Pere Marquette Lodge and Conference Center, in Grafton, Illinois.  As always, it was great to see some of the Toastmasters from around the District, that I don't see except at District events.  I always learn something, and this time was no exception.  And I always have fun, too, and this conference was definitely fun, as well.

I always think of the Holiday Season as beginning with the Fall Conference, because it's almost always the weekend before Thanksgiving.  So it really does lead right into the craziest six weeks of the year.  Well, for most people it's a crazy time of year, anyhow.  For me, it's usually a time I can slow down a bit, and get some quilting stuff done.  I absolutely don't leave home at all on Black Friday.  I have get-togethers with a few groups during December, but I don't have nearly as much craziness as many folks I know do.  So, while everyone else is hustling and bustling, I can nest and quilt.  I always get in the mood to work on quilting at this time of year, too.  I think it may go back to my days in school, when I did a lot of crafting and sewing during Christmas break, that I didn't necessarily have time for during the school year.

For the rest of this year, I'm going to try to get a number of my completed quilt tops layered up, quilted, and ready to be bound.  Then in the early part of the new year, I'll have a binding marathon, and all of a sudden, I'll have a whole bunch of newly-finished quilts ;-)

For today,  I can show you a pair of socks I finished recently.  This was a pair I test-knitted for a designer who is new to me.  I stumbled upon her Ravelry group, and happened to be on the site right after she'd posted a request for test knitters, and was able to be the first volunteer.  They may look like they're from two different yarns, but they're not.  I was working from both ends of the skein, and apparently, the hand-dyed yarn was not dyed consistently throughout.  I really like the effect of slightly mismatched socks, though I know there are folks out there who would be bothered by it.  Anyhow, here they are:

Take a Peek

Last week, I finished up this cowl, and blocked it over the weekend:

FeatherLaceCowl
It's not really crooked or lopsided, I was just apparently standing at a funny angle -- when I fold it in half again, the top edges and the bottom edges are nicely in line all the way along.

I also finally got around to blocking several other things that have been waiting a while for that.  First, here's my Color Affection shawl:

Color Affection
This is supposed to be striped in three colors, but unfortunately, the colors in my yarns were closer to each other than I thought they'd be, so I lost quite a bit of the stripe effect.  Here are the yarns I used for this:

Yarn for Color Affection
Looking at this, it seems obvious that these yarns would be somewhat "blendy," but in person I really thought they'd be more distinct from each other.  No matter, I still like this and will wear it.

Then a fun little cowl I made during a knit-along (KAL) with the designer's group on Ravelry:

BuzzLightyear_and_the_Goddess

Then two basic long cowls/infinity scarves, one for DH:

CowlForMarty

and one for me:

WarmCowlForMe

The color is horrible on those last two pictures.  Here's the yarn that I used for DH's cowl:

Yarn for Blue Cowl

and here's the yarn I used for mine:

Yarn for Green Cowl

I'm glad to have gotten all this blocking done, and to be able to use these items now.

I've got a couple other pairs of socks I'm making good progress on, so I hope to show those here very soon.  And maybe some more quilty pictures, before too long.  For now, I'm off to do some sewing!

More Knitting Stuff

I've finally got some space where I can leave my sewing stuff out, and have room to work on it.  But, I'm always working on knitting stuff in the background.  It's more portable, I can do it when I want to watch television or a movie, and it's very meditative in a way that sewing on a machine isn't.

I've previously shown you the first six pairs of socks I made for the 26 Pair Plunge, which runs from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.  I'm ahead of schedule a bit, as I just finished Pair #13 last Thursday.  Here are pairs 7-13:

Gingered Peaches done

CandyNecklace

Stealth Monsters

Changing into Vanilla

Colorful Socks for Marty
This pair is for my DH, the only pair in this Plunge so far that is.

A Good Start...

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm participating in the 26 Pair Plunge, which runs from 1 July 2012 through 30 June 2013.  In that time, we're challenged to finish 26 pairs of knitted or crocheted socks.  They can be things we already have started, or things we start new for the challenge.

So far, I've finished six pairs for this new Plunge year.  Here they are:

I have some more in progress that I should be able to finish up pretty soon.  But I really want to cast on a couple of shawls that have been calling to me....

Next week, I'll talk about the quilting I've done so far this year.  Have a great weekend.

More Finished Socks

I recently changed from the 26 Pair Plunge to the 52 Pair Plunge -- so now, instead of 26 pairs of socks between 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2012, I'm trying to complete 52 pairs in that same time span. I've recently completed numbers 11-14:

I'm slightly ahead in my pace, but still need to finish almost a pair a week, on average. I still have a lot of partially-completed pairs, as well as more new things I'd like to start. I don't know if I'll actually finish 52 pairs of socks by the end of June, but I'll give it a good try. Even if I don't make it, I'll have lots of great new socks ;-)

My DH is getting some new socks out of this endeavor, as well. So he's happy about it too.

Socks, a Mug Rug, and Sacks!

I've finished the first 9 pairs of socks for the 26 Pair Plunge on Ravelry. The challenge is to finish 26 pairs of socks in a year, from 1 July 2011 -- 30 June 2012. You can include any socks you had in progress before July 1, as long as they're not completed until on or after July 1. So, as you may recall, I've been working on getting a headstart going on a number of pairs of socks.

here they are:

Then, I participated in a mug rug swap in the Quilters Knitting group on Ravelry. My partner should get her package tomorrow or Monday at the latest. I was late sending out her mug rug, so I also made her a project bag and a tote bag, in the hopes that at least she'll think the package was worth waiting for ;-)

Her mug rug:

And the tote bag:

Now to get back to sock knitting -- I'm participating in a challenge for the month of August, to finish as many pairs of socks as possible. I've got a lot of in-progress socks to choose from, so I'm taking the opportunity to be inspired by the challenge, and get some things finished.

Thanks for coming by to play. Come back again soon.

Why Haven't I Been Sewing?

In yesterday's post, I mentioned that I really haven't done any sewing since I've been home from retreat. That was May 15th, when I came home. So, why has it been just about a month with no sewing happening here? Well, I came home with a cold, which turned into a bacterial bronchitis, and was on antibiotics for over a week. Then, I apparently developed an allergy to the antibiotic, and had hives for nearly a week. Then I was playing a bit of catch-up with things that didn't get done while I was gone. I'm still trying to get completely caught up.

The other thing I've been doing, though, is a lot of knitting. I'm participating in a challenge on Ravelry that will begin on July 1. There are two versions of the challenge -- the 52 pair plunge, where you knit 52 pairs of socks in one year; and the 26 pair plunge, where you knit 26 pairs in the same amount of time. I signed up for the 26 pair plunge, because that's plenty challenging enough for me. 52 pairs would be pretty well impossible, as slowly as I knit. The cool thing is that any WIPs (works in progress) count, as long as they're finished after July 1, 2011 (and before the end of June 30, 2012). So I'm getting as many pairs cast on as I can, and trying to make some significant progress. The only way I can really expect to complete this challenge is with this legal head start. So here's what I've got that's showing significant progress:

This pair is in a pattern called "Hermione's Everyday Socks." It's just a simple texture pattern, nice with this lovely handpainted yarn. I'm loving these, and am actually further than this picture shows -- I'm nearly done with the heel increases, and almost ready to start turning the heel. Then I'll just work up the leg until I get the height I want.

This is a simple pair of ribbed socks in a self-striping yarn for my mother, who said she wanted "gray or black socks, since they'll go with the most stuff." I'm not willing to knit black socks -- too dark and hard to see, and too boring. However, this yarn isn't too bad. I almost like these. These are almost ready to begin the heel increases.

This is a simple ribbed pair for DH. I think I need another inch or two before I start the heel increases on these.

This is another simple pair, in a waffle stitch, for me. This yarn was a red-violet semisolid -- varying from almost white to fairly dark. I was trying to even out the color variation, and overdyed the yarn with Grape Kool-Aid. The color's still quite variable, but it's more of a blue-violet now, and I really like it. These are further along than in the picture, ready to start heel increases.

This pair is being worked from the cuff down to the toe (the others so far have all been toe-up), and I've just turned the heel. Ready to pick up gusset stitches, and work my way down the foot. I really love this yarn, with all its shades of greens.

This is another pair being worked top-down, and I've got the heel flap about halfway done on them. This pair is for DH.

This is a pair of Basketweave socks, which needs a few more inches done before starting the heel increases. This is a slap-you-in-the-face bright yellow, called "Dandelion." It's well named.

This is another pair being worked top-down. It's a pattern called "Jaywalker," and I got a little obsessed with it last weekend. I had part of the cuff done Saturday morning, and by the time I went to bed Saturday night, I had 5" of the legs done. I really like these!

This is another basic ribbed pair of toe-up socks, for DH. There's about 3 more inches to go on these before I start the heel increases. This yarn reminds me of Halloween.

This is a pattern called "Jacobean," and I'm making these for my mother. Mostly because I think she'll like the pink more than I do, and her foot is an inch shorter than mine. These are further than the picture shows, I've started the heel increases on these. I keep this pair by the computer, so when I'm uploading photos here or to Flickr, I knit a round or two during the wait time.

It's hard to see the pattern to these, but it's a sort of wave design. The yarn is a luscious forest-y green semisolid. The variation in color is part of why the stitch pattern is difficult to see, I think. Still, I'm going to love these when they're finished. These are ready to start the heel increases, too.

This is another pair of basic ribbed toe-up socks. These are for a friend. I've got about 2" to go on these before I can start the heel increases. This yarn is called "Neon." It's fun and happy, and it's cheery to work on these. The ribbing is drawing in more than the flat knitting at the very ends of the toes, but when these have feet in them, they won't look all distorted like this.

I have some others socks in progress, but they're more like just barely started, and not nearly as interesting to look at, at this point. I've got lots of heel turns to do, then I'll have a lot of "straightaway" knitting, ready for waiting rooms and doctors' offices and riding in the car times and meeting times and other times like that.

Almost all of these socks have been started in the last few months. So, you can see why I haven't gotten much sewing done recently ;-)
